FEBRUARY MOVIE NIGHT : THE RADIANT CITY

The Radiant City is a National Film Board of Canada film released in 2006 at the Toronto Film Festival, about suburban sprawl and the fictional Moss family who live in the suburbs. Since the end of World War II, one kind of urban residential development has dominated how cities in North America have grown – the suburbs. The narrative is set in the Evergreen suburb of Calgary, Alberta. The Moss family discusses and portrays life in the suburbs, and the various flaws and advantages of modern suburban life. In these newer neighborhoods, there is a sense of careless sprawl in a car-dominated culture and vehicle-driven master planning that contrast more organically grown older communities. Interspersed with the comments of various experts about the nature of suburbia, we follow the lives of various inhabitants of this pervasive urban sprawl and hear their thoughts.

The movie will be shown on Tuesday, February 23rd at the DCFA. As usual, the doors will open at 6:00 p.m., and the movie will start at 6:30 p.m.
