1/24 Eco-Green School Night

1st Annual Eco-Green School Night
Lady Bird Johnson Middle School
6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

All parents and community members are invited to attend the event.  On Tuesday, Lady Bird Johnson will open their doors and let everyone explore the first Net Zero Middle School in the USA. The goal for the night is to have FUN and spend time with family and community members. Here is a basic outline of the events planned:

  • Students will be showcasing their project based learning projects for Fall 2011
  • Science FUN for parents and students - Participate in interactive labs on renewable energy, solar and wind energy
  • History iPad exploration – learn how to use an iPad and set up a Google email account
  • Project Share training – learn how your kids operate paperless during the school day
  • Math Energy Data calculation activities – learn the Convia energy system that JMS uses to ensure “net zero”
  • Library activities – Get to know your “green” Cybrary – check out books for your family
  • Parent Center training – sign up to learn English using Rosetta Stone,  PTA volunteer sign-up
  • Nurse Wellness Booth – info on wellness and healthy eating
  • Can you build a rollercoaster, hovercraft or baking soda rocket? – hosted by the Elective department
  • Recycling – learn about the City of Irving’s Recycling Center and how your family can participate
  • Parents can learn about the FREEDOM PASS used to motivate greatness.

4/2 Fundamentals of Lighting

FOL is an industry recognized educational course designed to instill the fundamental principles of Lighting. The course is ideally suited to specifiers, manufacturers, electrical distributors, contractors and utility personnel who are new to lighting or wish to brush up on their lighting skills. Learn from highly qualified and respected professionals who teach the 7-session course over a 7-week period.

FOL Course Content: Basic Lighting Concepts/Vision & Color, Light sources & Ballasts, Luminaires and Lighting Controls, Photometry and Lighting Calculations, Lighting for Interiors, Lighting for Exteriors and Important Issues in Lighting.

Classes are Mondays from 6-9 pm beginning April 2, 2012 - May 7, 2012.

12/19 Sustainability Essentials Webinar

This one-hour webinar provides a grounding in the environmental issues related to home furnishings, including the factual basis for climate change, problems with indoor air quality, toxic waste, and water conservation. Source documents are public records such as the U.N. IPCC 4th Assessment Report and the U.S. EPA, translated from technical jargon into easily understood concepts with common references all explicitly linked to the home furnishings industry.  Content also includes a synopsis of GREENleaders, the industry first certified sustainability training course.  This webinar is intended to give participants useful information you can begin using in your business immediately as well as answer any questions you may have about getting the most out of SFC membership and participating in the full exam program to receive your credentials as a local expert in green furnishings.
